I was asked today what I like to eat on long training rides. I replied that I’ve recently ditched energy gels in favour of natural whole foods like dates and raisins after learning that they perform just as well as sports jelly beans for prolonged cycling.
Inspired by this conversation I wanted to create a high energy snack that I could eat on long rides or just enjoy at home or in the office when in need of a natural sugar boost.
These balls also contain maca powder which is full of vitamin B2 (riboflavin). Riboflavin helps the body break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats to produce energy, and it allows oxygen to be used by the body, which is just what I need when I’m out on a long training ride.
These are really simple to make and don’t require any baking or refrigeration to be enjoyed.

High Energy Date Balls
All natural high energy data and maca powder balls great for fuelling the body during exercise.
- 1 cup pitted dates
- 1/3 cup cashew nuts
- 1/4 cup oats
- 2 tbsps maca powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
Add the nuts, oats maca powder and cinnamon to a food processor and blend until fine
Add the peanut butter and dates and blend again for a few more minutes until it turns to dough
Roll into balls
