Who would of thought it. 30km south west of Florence and just down the road from where we are staying is a little piece of vegan-zen called La Fonte.
La Fonte is an organic vegan restaurant situated at the bottom of a rather steep hill just outside of Montespertoli, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. To describe La Fonte as a ‘restaurant’ is actually a disservice. Run by a vegan couple (Sylvia and Luigi), to eat here is to be invited into their home and be treated like their guest. They are both vegans themselves and have been running their restaurant out of their living room for the past 25 years.
We enjoyed the food here so much that we ate here on both Friday and Saturday night. These are actually the only 2 nights that La Fonte is open, otherwise we would have been back for more.
The menu changes every week, with Luigi doing all the cooking and Sylvia running the front of house. Across the 2 nights we ate vegan spaghetti with an amazing home-made sauce, Sylvia’s home-made seitan steaks that she makes from scratch, plum cobbler dessert (so good) and all of their starters (twice.)
Whether you’re a vegan or not, I’d highly recommended visiting La Fonte if you’re ever in this region of Italy. The food and experience is completely unique and I’m already looking forward to going back.
